CFM, l/min and kW conversion

A flow in CFM on an American data sheet, in l/min on a European one? Convert it, then see which compressor in our range delivers it, and at what power.

How this is calculated

Conversions used: 1 cfm = 28.317 l/min; 1 m³/min = 1,000 l/min = 60 m³/h ≈ 35.3 cfm; 1 l/s = 60 l/min.

There is no exact conversion between CFM and kW: the same motor delivers less air as the pressure rises. The configurator therefore uses the actual flow rates of our compressors, taken from their data sheets, at the chosen pressure. If a model's flow is only known at a higher pressure than the one chosen, that lower flow is used.

For power alone, the average flow / kW ratio is calculated on our S series, screw compressors from 5.5 to 22 kW.

CFM, SCFM, FAD: which flow are we talking about?

The flow that matters is free air delivery (FAD): the air actually delivered at the outlet, converted back to intake conditions. Some data sheets give the intake flow, which looks better, or a flow in SCFM, measured under standard conditions. Always compare two compressors with the same type of flow and at the same pressure.

For tools, consumption is often given in CFM at 90 psi, about 6.2 bar: this is the working pressure of most air tools.
