Workshop

Quiet compressor for workshops

Why a screw compressor is quieter than a piston compressor, and how to install it to reduce workshop noise. 2-year warranty, technicians and dealers in the UK.

Compressor noise tires out teams, disrupts phone conversations and can be heard all the way to reception. When the compressor runs all day, the noise level becomes a real selection criterion.

Why a screw compressor is quieter

A piston compressor compresses air in bursts: every stroke of the piston produces an impact, and that characteristic hammering is what you hear in the workshop. A screw compressor compresses air through the continuous rotation of two screws, with no back-and-forth movement. Operation is smoother, and the machine is generally housed in a soundproofed enclosure.

The result: for comparable use, a screw compressor is far more comfortable to have next to a workstation.

Installing your compressor to limit noise

  • A dedicated room or a location set apart, well ventilated: the compressor needs fresh air to cool down.
  • A stable, level installation, on a floor that does not resonate.
  • Flexible connections between the machine and the network, so vibrations are not transmitted to the pipework.
  • Regular maintenance: a well-maintained compressor stays quieter than a machine with clogged filters.

Frequently asked questions — Workshop

What is the quietest air compressor for a workshop?

For comparable use, a screw compressor is noticeably quieter than a piston compressor: it compresses air through the continuous rotation of two screws, without the hammering of a piston. It is generally housed in a soundproofed enclosure. The noise level of each AIRSTAHL model is given on its technical data sheet.

Why is my piston compressor so loud?

Because it compresses air in bursts: each movement of the piston produces an impact, hence the characteristic hammering. The noise increases further if it stands on a floor that resonates, is rigidly connected to the network or has clogged filters. Better installation helps, but switching to a screw compressor makes a real difference to comfort.

Can I install the compressor directly in the workshop?

Yes, especially with an enclosed screw compressor, but a dedicated room or a location away from the workstations is still preferable. In any case, the location must be well ventilated, as the compressor needs fresh air to cool down. Stand it level on a stable floor and leave space around it for maintenance.

How can I reduce air compressor noise?

Move it away from workstations or isolate it in a ventilated room, stand it on a stable floor that does not resonate and connect it to the network with a flexible hose so that vibrations are not transmitted. Regular maintenance also matters: a machine with clogged filters is noisier. Never shut the compressor in an unventilated box, as it would overheat.

Does a screw compressor need its own plant room?

It is not compulsory, but it is ideal for noise and for the cleanliness of the intake air. The room must be ventilated to remove the heat given off by the machine, and kept frost-free. Also plan for condensate disposal and clear access for maintenance.

What is the best quiet compressor for a small workshop?

AIRSTAHL screw compressors start at 5.5 kW, a power rating suited to a small workshop that uses air all day. The 7.5 kW 4-in-1 combines compressor, 420 L air receiver, dryer and filtration, which simplifies installation when space is tight. The configurator on our website helps you choose the power rating according to your tools.
