Compressor for spray booths

Which compressor for a spray booth? Dry, filtered air at stable pressure with AIRSTAHL screw compressors. 2-year warranty, technicians and dealers in the UK.

A spray booth is unforgiving of poor-quality compressed air. Water, oil or dust in the system, and the finish pays the price: craters, bubbles, poor flow-out. Choosing the compressor that supplies the booth is therefore as much about air quality as it is about power.

Three rules for supplying a spray booth

1. Dry the air before the booth

Compressed air naturally contains water vapour, which condenses as it cools in the pipes. A refrigerated dryer installed after the compressor removes this moisture before it reaches the spray gun.

2. Filter as close as possible

Filtration at the compressor outlet, backed up by a filter at the painting station, captures particles and oil aerosols. This is what makes a clean finish possible, coat after coat.

3. Keep the pressure stable

The spray gun needs steady pressure throughout each pass. A correctly sized air receiver acts as a buffer and smooths out variations in demand.

Which screw compressor for a spray booth?

  • One booth, one workshop: the Screw compressor 7.5 kW 4-in-1 integrates a 420 L air receiver, the dryer and filtration. It is the simplest solution to install.
  • One booth and several preparation bays: the 11 kW and 15 kW models, combined with an air receiver and a dryer suited to your network.

Frequently asked questions — Painter and body shop

What size compressor do I need for a spray booth?

A spray gun uses around 350 l/min at about 6 bar; check this on the gun's data sheet. You then need to add the preparation stations running at the same time and keep a margin. For a spray booth on its own, the 7.5 kW 4-in-1 screw compressor is suitable; with several preparation stations, move up to the 11 or 15 kW.

Do I need an air dryer for painting in a spray booth?

Yes. Compressed air contains water vapour that condenses in the hoses and comes out at the spray gun, causing bubbles and flow defects. A refrigerated dryer fitted after the compressor removes this moisture before the booth. On the 7.5 kW 4-in-1 screw compressor, it is already built in.

What air filtration do I need for automotive spray painting?

Filtration at the compressor outlet, after the dryer, to capture particles and oil aerosols, supplemented by a filter at the painting station, as close as possible to the spray gun. For the most demanding spray guns, follow the paint or gun manufacturer's recommendations on air quality. Remember to replace the cartridges at the specified intervals: a saturated filter no longer filters.

Why does my air pressure drop while spray painting?

Either the compressor lacks air flow for all the workstations in use, or the air receiver is too small to smooth out demand, or the network is undersized or leaking. A correctly sized air receiver acts as a buffer and keeps the pressure stable during the pass. The air receiver size calculator on our website helps you check this.

Can I use a piston compressor for a spray booth?

It is not recommended once the booth is used regularly. A piston compressor is not made to run continuously; it overheats and sends more oil and moisture into the system, which shows on the finish. A screw compressor combined with a dryer and filtration ensures stable, clean air.

Where should the compressor go in relation to the spray booth?

Outside the booth and away from sanding areas, in a ventilated room that supplies cool air with little dust. The dryer and filtration are fitted after the compressor, followed by a filter at the painting station. Avoid long pipe runs through cold areas, where water condenses.
